Im not a recruiter, and I don't know too much about all of the careers offered, but i do know about mine! My AFSC is Aircraft Structural Maintenance. I do the sheet metal, rivets, composits, fabric, and other general maintenance that has to do with the structure of the plane. I have been in for over a year now, and still have more training to do.. but I think I am pretty happy with it so far. I am also the first female in my squadron EVER to be in my job.

I would LIKE to do Still Photography 3V0X2. Are they any job guarantees for Active? I may have to wait longer for this job but it's my #1 choice, right now.

I saw your videos a while back on Youtube and came across them again. This is interesting because, I am scheduled to be sworn in on the 4th of Jan. for Aircraft Structural on F-16s in the Minnesota ANG. My recruiter informed me that as soon as I sign the papers, I will start attending drills. So one of my questions is, what can I expect out of drills without being trained yet in my AFSC? How exactlly did the bonus work? Half after BMT? As well as all of the other benefits? If I have any choice in the matter, do you think that going to Texas in the summer would be a bad idea? I am just hoping to take as little time of from college as possible, as I want to get my degree ASAP and start applying for pilot slots. Have you seen anyone become an officer while still on their enlisted contract during your time with the ANG? Right now one of the main reasons I am going to do this is for change for the better in my life. It appears that it was the same for you; so I would be happy to hear any insight you have.

I am so sorry for the late response, I assume, now that you are offically sworn in, they have answered all of these questions. But I will answer them anyway, in case it helps anyone. AIR NATIONAL GUARD BONUS: You get it in two installments. *one half right when you come back from tech school. *second half on your 3rd anniversary. When to go to BMT?? TX in the summer SUCKS. TX in the winter SUCKS! The pros and cons: Winter: (CONS) gets down to 30 degrees, they dont supply proper cold weather gear. You are always chilly. They make you march ALOT, lots of running too. Lack of sunlight, if you suffer from depression- this will not help! (PROS) At least you are not sweating and dying of heat exhaustion. Summer: (CONS) Hot hot hooootttness. I hear it is really rough, especially if you are a northerner like me! (PROS) They have these neat flag levels... if it gets above a certian temp, they put up a BLACK FLAG, means noooo physical activity outside. You will NOT run as much and be exersize as much as if you go in the winter.

I actually have not signed up yet. Delay after delay, ya know its the Air Force! lol So how long specifically am I looking at for tech School for aircraft structural?. As it is I am kind of hoping I do not have to take a semester off from school, but I do realize I may have to. Did your unit give you any choice in when your Tech school was or was it just automatic?

It for active duty, it is 4 months. for Guard, it is a total of 5 months. 4 months in Florida, 1 month straight at your base.
The Guard, will give you somewhat of a choice of when you want to go... i dont believe active does though.
With the Guard, they have to "purchase" seats in the classes... whatever active duty does not use up, the guard, buys them. Sometimes, there are no seats.. due to a high enlistment into the active forces...(army, marines, navy, air force, they all use the same tech schools.)
So, that is why it took me a year to go to tech school--- economy crashed, enlistments in active duty sky rocketed= poor me |

Crazy....I swore in October. I got my seat about a month before that (sept) and my seat for Tech school (aircraft structural maintenance) at that time. I had to wait to ship to basic for 6 months (March 2010) because the tech school seat wasn't open until June 2010. It's a long wait if you choose that path. Good luck!
